Shortly before Christmas 2020, I plugged my guitar into my amp and within ten minutes I’d written the majority of this song. Sometimes music is a process, where you add little bits here and there, building a song up like a house. But sometimes writing music is plugging in and letting it out–it just comes in one fell swoop.
In January 2021, I started tracking demos for this song. Up until this point I’d mostly recorded with an Ibanez semi-hollow body guitar and a Squier Jaguar short scale bass. But with this song I decided to bring back my Gibson SG. I also recorded the bass parts with my Ibanez SR-405 5-string bass for the first time, and I’m really happy with how that sounded.
Rounding out the track are some samples from the movie Pirates of Silicon Valley, which are where the title of the song comes from. Because of the copyright issues involved with sampling, they have been stripped out of the song on all the streaming services. However, you can still hear the original above.
All the guitars and bass tracks were performed by me, and I also handled all the drum, synth, and sample programming.
